ABBOTSFORD — Dr. Jo-ann Archibald, also known as Q’um Q’um Xiiem, has been announced as the fourth Chancellor of the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV).

On Thursday (March 28), UFV announced Dr. Archibald would begin her new role on April 1, 2024 taking over after two terms by Andy Sidhu.

Archibald is an esteemed Indigenous education scholar and member of the Soowahlie First Nation, with roots in UFV tracing back about 50 years. Some of her achievements include being appointed as an officer of the Order of Canada and playing a key role in incorporating Indigenous content into curriculums at the K-12 and university levels.

Dr. Archibald states she values the commitment of UFV at addressing Indigenous education for all, but there’s always space for improvement. “I’ve witnessed UFV’s remarkable growth over the past five decades, yet at the same time I feel it’s important that the university continues to address the needs of the region,” said Archibald.

“Stó:lō people have cared for this land since time immemorial, so that many generations could live well,” noted Archibald. “Now, as a Canadian society we’re facing crises, which relate to climate, social, and economic issues. UFV can continue to be proactive in addressing these issues through the programming it offers.”

As Chancellor, Dr. Archibald will serve as ceremonial head of UFV, officiating convocations and granting UFV credentials, as well as acting as an ambassador for the institution.
