CHILLIWACK — The committee behind an annual trail race that traverses Cultus Lake says proceeds from the 2023 event will provide two scholarships to SD33 students and fund various other initiatives in the Chilliwack community.

According to a news release from committee volunteer Dave Stephen, funds generated from last October’s 20th Around the Lake Give ‘R Take trail race are providing $10,000 to various local organizations to support outdoor recreation and safety, and Chilliwack students.

The Around the Lake Give ‘R Take Trail Race Society organizes the annual trail race with runners travelling approximately 30 kilometres around Cultus Lake, either as solo entries or in relay teams of two. The race, which has been running for 20 years, attracts over 315 participants annually and sells out within days of registration opening.

Proceeds generated from race registrations enable the not-for-profit trail race society to provide donations to local groups. This year’s recipients are:

  • Chilliwack School District, $2000 (for two student financial awards of $1,000 each)
  • Chilliwack Park Society, $2000;
  • Vedder Mountain Motorcycle Club, $1000;
  • Chilliwack Outdoor Club, $1000;
  • Chilliwack Search and Rescue, $1000;
  • $3,000 trail sponsorship to the Fraser Valley Mountain Bike Association

The race attracted registrants from around British Columbia, Bellingham, Washington, and as far as Dublin, Ireland. The annual event is organized by a committee of volunteers, under the auspices of the Around the Lake Trail Race Society. Funds generated through registrations and sponsorships have enabled race organizers to distribute thousands of dollars over 20 years to local, non-profit organizations that support outdoor recreation, as well as $1,000 scholarships for students in the Chilliwack School District.

The 2024 race, which will include a new one-kilometre kids’ trail race, will take place Saturday, October 19, at Cultus Lake.
