LANGLEY — The civilian watchdog agency tasked with investigating all police-related incidents that result in serious harm or death says a male passenger has died following a collision on Highway 13 earlier this week.

According to a news release from the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO), a black Mazda was involved in a collision near the intersection of 16 Avenue and 264 Street, also known as Highway 13, in the early morning of Monday, Mar. 18.

Information provided by the Langley RCMP states that in the early morning of Mar. 18, an officer observed a black Mazda travelling east on 16 Avenue and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

The IIO says it was reported that the Mazda did not stop and was involved in a collision at the intersection of 16 Avenue and 264 Street. Both occupants of the Mazda were injured and transported to a hospital. The male passenger was seriously injured, while the female driver sustained only minor injuries.

The sole occupant of the other vehicle involved in the collision was not hurt.

The male passenger in the Mazda sustained serious, life-threatening injuries in the collision, and was transported to hospital. Sadly, the man was subsequently pronounced deceased Tuesday evening, Mar. 19.

The IIO investigations continues to determine what role, if any, police actions or inaction may have played in the death. The incident occurred between midnight and 12:30 a.m. on Monday, Mar. 18.

The IIO is asking any person who saw the man’s interactions with police, or has other relevant information about the incident, to please contact the IIO Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It examines and thoroughly investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
