VANCOUVER — The B.C. Conservatives announced Friday (Mar. 15) that Tony Luck, whose professional experience spans finance, public service and a 26-year career with B.C. Hydro, has been selected as its MLA candidate in the newly redrawn Fraser-Nicola riding located northeast of Chilliwack.

The newly redrawn, expansive Fraser-Nicola riding now includes Hope, Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs, the District of Kent, the Fraser Canyon communities of Yale and Boston Bar, and communities like Merritt, Lytton, Logan Lake, and Lillooet.

According to a biography on the B.C. Conservative website, Luck is a former councillor for the City of Mission who also held leadership positions within the Fraser Valley Regional District. He spent a decade as a financial planner, 26 years with B.C. Hydro, and is currently a licensed realtor. He held executive positions within the Southern Interior Interior Local Government Association.

“Tony’s wealth of experience demonstrates his commitment to effective governance and community service,” the B.C. Conservatives said.

Luck has been actively involved on a number of civic fronts, including the Chamber of Commerce, Community Futures Nicola Valley and the UFV Alumni Association.

“He believes in the power of grassroots initiatives to drive positive change and has dedicated his time to volunteering and supporting local causes,” the B.C. Conservatives said. “Tony’s community involvement reflects his deep-rooted commitment to the well-being of Fraser-Nicola residents.”

Luck’s stated goals center around transparency, accountability and fiscal responsibility in government. If elected, he says he’ll work to implement fair taxation policies that foster economic growth and alleviate the burden on working-class families. Luck says he’ll advocate for affordable housing and healthcare reform by engaging directly with medical professionals and community stakeholders.

Healthcare reform is a sensitive topic in communities like Merritt, where Interior Health closed the emergency room at Nicola Valley Hospital at least 18 times in 2023, or about six per cent of the entire year as of October 18, 2023. A shortage of healthcare personnel is often cited by Interior Health as the reason for the ER closures.
