Chilliwack firefighters contain townhouse fire in Promontory Wednesday morning with help from neighbours, bystanders
CHILLIWACK — Swift action by Chilliwack firefighters combined with vigilance from neighbours and timely updates from bystanders were instrumental in keeping a fire from spreading throughout a townhouse and the neighbouring strata complex in Promontory Wednesday morning (Mar. 13).
According to a news release from the Chilliwack Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday for the report of smoke in a townhouse in the 46900 block of Russell Road in Promontory. Thanks to the vigilance of neighbours and continued updates from bystanders, the fire was quickly upgraded to a structure fire, prompting the deployment of adequate resources. Approximately 20 firefighters from Halls 1 (Cheam Ave.) and 4 (South Sumas Road) responded to the area, focusing their efforts on confining and extinguishing the fire efficiently. Due to their quick actions, the fire was promptly extinguished, the fire department noted in its news release.
No occupants were present in the home at the time of the fire, and there have been no reported injuries among firefighters or residents. The fire is under investigation, though preliminary reports indicate the fire may have originated from an accidental electrical source.
“This underscores the importance of prioritizing electrical safety,” said Assistant Fire Chief Krista Minar. “Key tips include adhering to the manufacturer’s guidelines for electrical charging equipment, replacing worn cords and plugs, keeping electrical cords away from heat and water sources, and using multi-outlet extenders, power bars, and surge protectors cautiously and in accordance with manufacturer specifications.”
