Traffic tickets used in scams across Fraser Valley and other parts of B.C.
CHILLIWACK — The B.C. government, the Insurance Corporation of BC (ICBC) and the City of Vancouver all want people to know they will never send text messages seeking payments.
They have each posted statements warning of a scam related to traffic tickets, in which people receive a text message with a link to make a payment on a fake website that may be used to gather personal information and credit card numbers.
Bulletins posted by the province and ICBC say the messages direct people to pay purported speeding tickets on a fake website imitating the PayBC portal.
Residents of the Fraser Valley and other parts of B.C. are at risk of the scams. In Vancouver, the city says the scam involves a text message requesting payment for an overdue parking ticket.
