Abbotsford launches online effort to increase building permit efficiency

ABBOTSFORD — The City of Abbotsford says residents and developers in Abbotsford can navigate the building and renovation permit process more easily, thanks to its new online building permit application portal. The move is part of the city’s effort to modernize its application and permitting system to increase overall efficiency.

The digital portal allows users to submit building and demolition permit applications at any time of the day or night. The city says the portal is a convenient and secure platform for the entire application process. Applicants can upload all required documentation and drawings directly to the portal, eliminating the need for in-person visits to City Hall.

The online system also provides users with real-time access to check and track the status of their applications, manage multiple permits across the city, request changes, and access relevant project documents.

Mayor Ross Siemens says the significance of the portal will help address the critical issue of housing in the community. “This new online building application tool will make it easier on both builders and City staff to go through the permitting process and into the building stage of any project, which will hopefully lead to more housing getting built in our community,” said Siemens.

The portal features prompts to guide users in including all necessary information, drawings, and documentation for a complete application. The City’s permitting system will integrate with received applications. It’s believed the system will significantly expedite administrative processing. In addition, the digital platform enhances the coordination of files and enables staff to meet processing turnaround targets.

Funding for the development of the portal was provided in part by the Province of BC through the Local Development Approval Grant administered by the Union of BC Municipalities.
