**UPDATE: The Coquihalla Highway has reopened Thursday afternoon (Feb. 29) after a lengthy closure.**

Original story below from Thursday morning:

MERRITT — The Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt is nearing a 24-hour closure.

After a vehicle incident closed the stretch of Highway 5 at around 2:40 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 28), DriveBC says crews are now working to manage road conditions.

Another update is due at 10:00 a.m. Thursday but DriveBC says the estimated time of reopening is at noon.

A detour for travellers between Kamloops and area and the lower mainland is available via Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon. However, no detour is available on Highway 8 between Merritt and Spences Bridge.

Elsewhere, DriveBC says the Trans Canada Highway between Golden and Revelstoke is also expected to reopen at around noon Thursday. The stretch of Highway 1 closed Wednesday morning due to high avalanche hazard.

This is a developing story, and more information will be provided once it’s available.
