**UPDATE at 3:35 p.m. Saturday: Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener says criminality is not suspected in this multi-trailer fire. Cpl. Kiener said, “Yes, the Chilliwack RCMP responded to the fire on O’Byrne Road overnight. Our primary role was for crowd control as the Fire Department worked to extinguish the blaze.  There is no indication that this fire is suspicious and there is no further investigation that the RCMP will be conducted.  Thankfully there were no fatalities or injuries as a result of the fire.”

Original story below:

CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department was called to a fire involving multiple trailers sometime around 3:30 a.m. early Saturday morning (Feb. 24) at the Chilliwack River RV Campground & Park, a mobile home park.

According to Chilliwack resident Julie Hiscock, who monitors overnight scanner traffic, firefighters were dispatched to 50801 O’Byrne Road north of Chilliwack Lake Road, on the banks of the Chilliwack River.

The Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department reportedly sought mutual aid from the Chilliwack Fire Department.

A Fraser Valley Today reporter visited the campground and witnessed one fully burned trailer, another with significant fire damage, and a third trailer partially seared with visible exterior burn marks. Yellow caution tape has been strung across all three trailers. The smell of seared materials was still present Saturday morning.

Three elderly residents of the area who were out on a walk on O’Byrne Road Saturday morning told a Fraser Valley Today reporter that the three trailers were not occupied, including one that hadn’t been lived in since June 2023. The residents reportedly heard several booms associated with the fire, but said those were attributed to the tires burning, not propane tanks.

However, an anonymous person emailed Fraser Valley Today Monday morning stating one trailer had a tenant woken up by a neighbour that noticed the fire and warned the male tenant to get out. The trailer that was the most severely damaged was a seasonal trailer that had been slept in quite often. A third trailer that burned had not been occupied for quite some time. The anonymous person did not identify themselves in an email to Fraser Valley Today nor did they provide an email or phone number.
