Road closures coming to Chilliwack rail crossings

Feb 23, 2024 | 11:20 AM

CHILLIWACK — The City of Chilliwack is advising the public of a series of road closures in the area to allow work crews to conduct maintenance work at CN Rail crossings.

Yale Road will be fully closed at the intersection with the CN Rail tracks from Saturday (Feb. 24) morning at 8 a.m. until Monday at 1 p.m.

Another closure is planned Wednesday from 8 a.m. to Thursday at 8 p.m. at Lickman Road.

Officials say the crossing will be impassable during the time periods identified and suggests drivers, cyclists and others should use alternative routes.

Transport Canada introduced new standards for railway-grade crossings in 2014. In 2020, Technical Safety BC brought in new regulations for the railways it regulates. The crossings must be compliant by the start of 2028.

The public should expect to see improvements such as new flashing lights and gate systems at crossings in Chilliwack.

Southern Railway operates Chilliwack crossings at Yarrow Central Road, Lickman Road and Vedder Road. CN Rail operates the remaining crossings in Chilliwack.
