Last-minute negotiations ahead of possible Vancouver transit strike

Jan 20, 2024 | 5:55 AM

VANCOUVER — The University of British Columbia says it is preparing for the effects of a potential transit strike next week on students’ ability to get to campus.

The school says it won’t close if a strike happens, but some in-person classes may be moved online.

CUPE Local 4500, which represents more than 180 transit supervisors seeking a new contract, said earlier this week that it would be “withdrawing all services” starting Monday if a deal with Coast Mountain Bus Company isn’t made.

But, an agreement may be struck before then with both union and employer saying they have both accepted an offer by mediator Vince Ready to return to the bargaining table today.
