Fireworks ban in place across Fraser Valley
CHILLIWACK — When we think of New Year’s celebrations, we often think of colourful fireworks across the midnight sky. But like many other traditions, fireworks are falling out of favour for many reasons.
Shooting fireworks into the air in Chilliwack, Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley Regional District is illegal unless those behind the fireworks have proper certification and approvals from the municipal authorities.
Many of Canada’s major cities have permanently ended their fireworks displays for New Year’s. Montreal is the latest city to say good-bye to fireworks, citing rising costs as a primary reason.
According to Canadian hospital records, there were 210 cases of fireworks related injuries between April 1, 2011 and April 13, 2023. 128 of those cases, or 61 per cent of those who were injured suffered burn related issues. 19 per cent suffered eye injuries. And nearly three-quarters (74 per cent) of those injured required medical treatment in an emergency department or in a hospital ward.
