AGASSIZ — It’s never a dull moment at Kent Institution, a max-security federal prison in Agassiz, where correctional staff have to constantly be on the lookout for contraband and other items that inmates are prohibited from possessing.

On Tuesday, December 19, thanks to the efforts of alert prison staff, a package containing contraband and unauthorized items was intercepted and confiscated at Kent.

Correctional Service Canada says the contraband and unauthorized items seized consisted of crystal methamphetamine, cannabis concentrates, smart phones and SD cards. CSC estimates the aggregate value of these seizures is $183,300.

The police have been notified and an investigation is ongoing.

Though it doesn’t reveal the exact tricks of the trade, CSC says it uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. These tools include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.
