CHILLIWACK — Strohmaier Excavating (2019) Ltd. of Chilliwack has been awarded a nearly $300,000 RFP contract to construct a new parking lot behind Evergreen Hall in Chilliwack, adjacent to the Chilliwack Cultural Centre.

Chilliwack city council members voted unanimously Tuesday (Dec. 5) to accept the $299,451 proposal from the Chilliwack-based civil contractor that lists over 40 years of experience on its website.

“We have a history of successfully completed projects and have a solid reputation in the industry. Strohmaier Excavating (2019) Ltd. offers competitive pricing, which allows us to maintain a steady workflow through the year for private, municipal, commercial and federal clients,” Strohmeier Excavating stated on its website.

Proposals were received on November 15 from four shortlisted companies, also known as “proponents” by city staff, including B.A. Blacktop, Jake’s Construction Ltd. and Strohmeier Excavating (2019) Ltd.

B.A. Blacktop submitted a proposal of $352,355.86, Jake’s submitted a bid of $304,000 and Strohmeier Excavating (2019) Ltd. submitted the lowest proposal.

Funding for the project had already been allocated within the city’s approved 2023 financial plan, funded from the general capital reserve.

Chilliwack councillors expressed enthusiasm at the project moving forward after a large section of the parking lot behind Evergreen Hall and the Cultural Centre was repaved and completed in the past year.

“I just want to thank staff and whoever else that found some money to get this finished off,” Councillor Harv Westeringh said. “Basically, everything is nicely paved in that area. It’d be nice to wrap it all up.”

Mayor Ken Popove added, “Staff know I’ve been bugging them. I’m happy to [see it completed].”

A city staff member present at Tuesday’s meeting told councillors there will be new asphalt, drainage, parking lot islands, landscaping and irrigation to help with trees and vegetation.
