ABBOTSFORD — The University of the Fraser Valley says changes are coming to its Abbotsford campus.

According to a news release on its website, UFV reports that parking and food services will be impacted as construction begins on the university’s new student housing and dining hall. Both buildings are expected to be ready for occupancy in fall 2025.

Beginning in mid- to late December 2023, a large chunk of the northeast section of lot 10 will be unavailable for parking in order to accommodate construction of the new student housing. The southwest section of Lot 10 will remain open for students.

In an effort to optimize remaining space, new parking stall lines will be painted in spring 2024, while the lot 10b gravel area will be paved with painted lines. All elder parking and parking for people with disabilities will remain unchanged.

On the other side of campus, UFV’s Cascade Cafeteria will remain closed from 3 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2023 through to the completion of UFV’s new dining hall.

Starting in January 2024, food service will include the following vendors:

  • Temporary Cascade Cafeteria (S Building, 2nd floor)
  • Spirit Bear Café (A-West)
  • Tim Horton’s (G Building)
  • Triple O’s food truck (between Building E and S)
  • Fair Grounds Coffee Shop (SUB)

In January 2023, Turner Construction Company and Clark Builders announced that they had been selected to build student housing at the University of Fraser Valley in Abbotsford.

In a statement on the Turner Construction website, Turner said the sustainably-built facility would be located in the heart of the Abbotsford campus and provide students an affordable housing option.

The six-storey, $73 million mass timber building will feature 398 beds on the university’s Abbotsford campus.

The student housing facility will offer lounges, shared kitchens, a study, and mixed-use and cultural space. The project integrates what’s known as passive house building certification standards.

The project will be delivered through an integrated project delivery (IPD) method that generates increased efficiency and engagement of all project participants through all phases of design, fabrication, and construction. The construction team will include modularization and pre-fabrication into the building program.

Construction had been slated to begin in 2023 and be ready for occupancy in the fall of 2024, according to a January 2023 news release from the company.

“We are extremely excited to begin work on this housing project,” said Amit Patel, vice president and GM of Turner Construction Company. “It is great to be part of an extremely collaborative process that will result in environmentally friendly housing for students attending the University of Fraser Valley.”
