ABBOTSFORD — In what is described as a significant improvement to forensic medical examinations in the Fraser Valley, the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation has delivered a cutting-edge Cortexflo camera and lighting system to the Forensic Nursing Service at Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH). Thanks to the generosity of donors, this state-of-the-art system is poised to revolutionize the way forensic medical examinations are conducted in the hospital.

Established in 1999, the Forensic Nursing Service was initially designed to cater to 15 patients annually in the Fraser Valley East and Fraser Canyon area. However, the demand for its services has grown, with the service now treating approximately 160 patients each year. Patients from other medical facilities reporting or exhibiting signs of violence or abuse are transferred to the Emergency department at Abbotsford for specialized treatment and assessment by forensic nurses.

The Cortexflo camera and lighting system is a major technology upgrade, replacing a previously used phone and DSLR camera. The new system excels in providing better image quality, external lighting, and secure encrypted data storage. The elements are crucial to stand up to the standards expected in a courtroom. It simplifies, accelerates, and ensures the admissibility of forensic photography in court, addressing the shortcomings of the earlier technology.

Christina Simpson, the coordinator of the forensic nursing service, highlighted the prevalence of domestic violence cases involving severe trauma. Forensic nurses are not only offering compassionate care to victims but also meticulously documenting and collecting evidence crucial for civil or criminal proceedings.

Due to the surge in annual cases and their severity, Fraser Health is looking into the expansion of the program. “Given the growth in the number of annual cases and the seriousness of many of them, Fraser Health is considering expanding the now on-call Forensic Nursing Service to include some regularised positions to better meet the needs of the community, said Simpson. Experienced nurses interested in being part of the service are encouraged to explore Fraser Health job postings for more information.

The Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation, instrumental in procuring the Cortexflo system, raises funds to support essential equipment and programs endorsed by the Fraser Health Authority.
