Forensic medical examinations enhanced at Abbotsford Regional Hospital
ABBOTSFORD — In what is described as a significant improvement to forensic medical examinations in the Fraser Valley, the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation has delivered a cutting-edge Cortexflo camera and lighting system to the Forensic Nursing Service at Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH). Thanks to the generosity of donors, this state-of-the-art system is poised to revolutionize the way forensic medical examinations are conducted in the hospital.
Established in 1999, the Forensic Nursing Service was initially designed to cater to 15 patients annually in the Fraser Valley East and Fraser Canyon area. However, the demand for its services has grown, with the service now treating approximately 160 patients each year. Patients from other medical facilities reporting or exhibiting signs of violence or abuse are transferred to the Emergency department at Abbotsford for specialized treatment and assessment by forensic nurses.

The Cortexflo camera and lighting system is a major technology upgrade, replacing a previously used phone and DSLR camera. The new system excels in providing better image quality, external lighting, and secure encrypted data storage. The elements are crucial to stand up to the standards expected in a courtroom. It simplifies, accelerates, and ensures the admissibility of forensic photography in court, addressing the shortcomings of the earlier technology.
