AGASSIZ — Correctional Service Canada announced Friday (Oct. 27) that an inmate has died while in custody, and a lockdown is in place, at Mountain Institution, a medium-security federal prison west of Agassiz.

In a statement, CSC says Kelly Michael Richet, an inmate from Mountain Institution, died while in custody on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.

At the time of death, the inmate had been serving a sentence of 5 years, 1 month and 21 days for manslaughter since March 23, 2023.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.

On Tuesday, Oct. 24, a lockdown was put in place at Mountain Institution to enable staff members to conduct an exceptional search.

The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff, and inmates.

Visits have been suspended until the search is completed. Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is committed to preventing the entry of contraband into its institutions. CSC works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.
