CHILLIWACK — Demolition and removal of what’s left of a church on Williams Street should wrap up this month following a devastating fire that burned most of the 75-year-old church to the ground.

Multiple Chilliwack Fire Department engines and personnel were dispatched on Labour Day (Sept. 4) after a fire broke out at Cross Connection Church, 9310 Williams Street, in Chilliwack.

Firefighters spent several hours hour tackling the two-alarm blaze, deploying a ladder to attack flames on the roof of the older church.

The fire broke out sometime after 2:30 p.m. that day and attracted several engines and units. RCMP attended the scene as well.

According to an update on the church’s website dated October 10, “Final demolition and removal have begun and will continue for several weeks. The church leadership is in discussion with the insurance company regarding the next steps to rebuild.”

A previous update on the church’s website dated September 20 stated, “Church fire investigation determined the cause of the fire was ‘unknown.'”

The church has roots dating back to the 1940s when it started with 22 charter members in 1941. On September 6, 1947, two lots were purchased at the corner of Princess Avenue and Williams Street to build the current church.
