HOPE — There are still three more days left for individuals to submit their candidacy paperwork and run for a seat on the District of Hope council.

The deadline to submit all necessary candidacy paperwork and run for an open seat on Hope council is this Friday, October 20 at 4 p.m. at the municipal office.

A seat on Hope council became vacant after Councillor Crystal Sedore announced her resignation in late August and/or early September.

“Councillor Sedore has resigned her seat at Hope’s Council table effective immediately,” the district of Hope wrote on X/Twitter on Sept. 1. “The Mayor, Councillors, and staff thank her for courage to stand for public office and her service while there.”

Hope councillors are paid at least $18,300 a year for serving on council, according to a published report from June 2022.

Eligible candidates must be a Canadian citizen, 18 years of age or older on voting day Nov. 25, 2023, a resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed and not disqualified by the Local Government Act for being elected or holding the office.

Regular council meetings are held the second and fourth of each month. Council members also serve on committees that report to council and attend public events on behalf of the district.

Candidates for the by-election are capped at spending a maximum of $5,398.92.

The winner of the by-election will serve out the remainder of Sedore’s term through 2026.
