AGASSIZ — Correctional Service Canada hasn’t released information on the kind of assault an inmate suffered this past Monday at Mountain Institution, but the victim may have suffered a serious assault involving a weapon, like a stab wound, that required an airlift from a helicopter.

According to a news release Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m., CSC says an inmate was found to have been victim of an assault at Mountain Institution, a medium-security federal institution west of Agassiz, on Monday, October 9.

CSC reports the injured inmate was evaluated by staff members and transported to an outside hospital to receive treatment.

The Agassiz detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the institution are presently investigating the incident.

The assailants have been identified and the appropriate actions have been taken. CSC hasn’t said what those “appropriate actions” entail.

No staff members or other inmates were injured during this incident.

As with previous incidents of violence at the prison, CSC says the safety and security of institutions, their staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the Correctional Service of Canada says it will review the circumstances of the incident and take the appropriate measures.

According to scanner transmission heard by Fraser Valley Today this past Monday, the assault may have involved a stabbing. This has not been confirmed by correctional staff at Mountain Institution.

Fraser Valley Today attempted to contact Norma Hanson, who is listed as the assistant warden of management services at Mountain Institution, Thursday night after hours, but Hanson could not be reached for immediate comment.
