ABBOTSFORD — An Abbotsford couple with a heart for philanthropy says you can’t take it with you once you’re gone.

That’s why Abbotsford residents James and Pamela Braun have made a generous donation of $1 million to help establish an interventional radiology suite at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. The magnanimous contribution will enable Fraser Health doctors to perform minimally invasive, image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases and conditions.

According to a news release from the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation this week, the Brauns have made giving back to the community a priority.

“We have been fortunate enough to give back and to teach our children to give as well,” the couple said. “You need to recognize that you can’t take the money with you. It’s kind of nice to give when you are alive.”

Having recently been a patient-in-care at ARH, James says, “We had an incentive to make this a priority. We invest in a lot of places and the hospital is on the top.”

Elizabeth Harris, executive director for the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation, welcomed the donation from the Braun family at a time when aging equipment needs to be replaced at Abbotsford Hospital.

“We are absolutely overwhelmed and grateful for the financial gift from the Brauns. We have a vast need for replacing old equipment, which has reached its end of life, and the IR suite was one of our high priority items. By investing in state-of-the-art equipment we are hoping to make a lasting impact on providing better healthcare for our growing community,” Harris said.

The new IR suite will be able to give patients-in-care much needed support during an incredibly difficult time. IR procedures can be used as an alternative to more invasive surgeries and offer greater patient safety, less recovery time and shorter hospital stays.

Driven by a Christian ethos of charitable giving, the foundation says the Brauns instilled their belief in strong family, community and spirituality:

“Our kids will know how to give because of the values we instill today. We grew up with good principles, in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you,” the Brauns said.

The foundation added that the couple’s moral compass has summed up their continued belief in caring about others, giving and supporting the local community, and being good humans.

The Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation relies on gifts from the Fraser Valley community to strengthen its organization and provide an investment for our future health and wellness.
