FIFE, WASHINGTON — The GW Graham Grizzlies took their unbeaten record on the road to Washington state for the second time this season but met their match in a 33-21 loss to Fife High School, despite strong performances from standout players on offence, defence and special teams.

According to a game summary provided by assistant coach Ian Parks, the Fife Trojans started the game off strong with a 65-yard kickoff return followed by an early scoring run to go up 7-0. The Grizzlies countered with a quick strike to wide receiver Carter Dallas (8 catches, 136 yards) for a 40-yard scoring reception to make it 7-7.

GW Graham took a first half lead of 14-7 thanks to a 2-yard touchdown run by quarterback Aiden Hewitt, who had 17 completed passes for 190 yards, before the Trojans responded with a late touchdown to end the half. Carson Raine of the Grizzlies blocked the point-after-attempt from Fife to give the visitors a 14-13 lead going into halftime.

Running back Maleky Colgiu had a strong ground game running with 72 yards and a second half touchdown to give the Grizzlies a 21-13 lead in the third quarter. But penalties and a critical turnover in the fourth quarter put the game and the lead back in the hands of the Trojans, while the Grizzlies were unable to capitalize on their drives.

On defence, DE Riley Ashley led the team with 10 tackles, and LB Gavin Parks had 7 tackles, along with DE Brayden Fraser’s 5 tackles.

Special teams was on point again, with Riley Ashley 3/3 on PATs, and gunner Michael Mohammed recovered a fumble on a punt.

Although the final score wasn’t exactly what the Grizzlies had hoped for, GW Graham head coach Ryk Piché said, “We got exactly what we wanted out of our first 4 weeks. We were battle tested against some very tough teams, had an opportunity to develop our players and got some great learning objectives from film heading into the season.”

After a strong exhibition schedule, the Grizzlies officially start their season next week against the Vancouver College Fighting Irish on Friday, September 29 at 7 p.m. at home at Exhibition Field in Chilliwack.
