60-year-old tennis courts at Yarrow Community Centre to be removed for 41-stall parking lot

CHILLIWACK — Construction has begun on a project that will see the tennis courts at Yarrow Community Centre removed and replaced with a 41-stall parking lot, street lighting, landscaping and an electric vehicle charging station.

According to a staff report dated August 4, 2023 and prepared by Richard Fortin, parks planning manager for the City of Chilliwack, the Yarrow Community Hall (Centre) and community park parking lot has substantially more demand for parking than supplied. Fortin cited the popularity of the nearby Vedder Rotary Loop trail and a restriction of on-street parking on Community Street that was implemented in 2021.

Loewen Paving Ltd. won the contract to install a 41-stall parking lot due to its low bid of $190,300, which beat bids from Lil’ Bear Contracting Corporation ($265,000) and Mountainco ($250,102).

Chilliwack city council approved the contract/RFP with Loewen Paving at its meeting on August 15, 2023.

As part of the project, crews will remove the existing asphalt of the tennis courts and its chain link fence and a nearby 10-foot high brick wall, the staff report indicated. The EV charging station will contain a level 2 charger.
