Chilliwack Fire called to small fire on First Nations land, but learns it has no jurisdiction there
CHILLIWACK — Two engines from the Chilliwack Fire Department were dispatched to Chilliwack Lake Road Wednesday morning (Aug. 30) for the report of a fire, only to learn that they have no authority or jurisdiction on First Nations land.
According to scanner dispatch, Chilliwack firefighters were called to the area of 46120 Chilliwack Lake Road shortly after 7:20 a.m. Wednesday morning and discovered a small fire burning in a front yard.
Campfires and open burning have been banned for months in Chilliwack city limits due to the ongoing prohibition from the Coastal Fire Centre, of which Chilliwack is a part.
Per scanner transmissions with dispatch, Chilliwack firefighters said the fire was confined to the front yard and was contained, but indicated they had no jurisdiction due to 46120 Chilliwack Lake Road being on First Nations land.
