CHILLIWACK — It’s a great way to get close to the action of this weekend’s mud races in Chilliwack without paying admission fees.

The North West Mud Race Association (NWMRA) is looking for volunteers to help staff this weekend’s mud races at Heritage Park for one of the biggest races of the season.

The action happens Saturday and Sunday, August 19-20 at Heritage Park as 200-foot mud drags, junior racers, blown alcohol dragsters and the mega “hill ‘n hole” trucks enchant spectators and volunteers alike.

Volunteers are needed to staff stations like the gate setup, tents, tables and chairs, or handle admission, waivers and wristbands. There will also be volunteer opportunities at apparel tables, registration areas, track setup to include pylons, stakes, extinguishers and pit watering. If those areas don’t suit your fancy, the association also needs timing assistants, manual timers, staging helpers, tow out and hooker assistants, along with wristband checkers and set up and take down personnel.

Whether you’re a volunteer or spectator, NWMRA strongly recommends wearing ear protection. The front gate does have limited supply of ear protection for sale.

During intermission free posters will be available for the kids. Trucks will be lined up in front of the stands for general admission passes to get pictures and posters signed. Anyone with pit passes is welcome to go up to the stands or around the pits to get them signature and take pictures of the trucks on the pit side.

Volunteers are asked to arrive Saturday and Sunday morning by 9 a.m. Saturday races get underway at 1 p.m., while Sunday races start at noon. General admission gates open at 11 a.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Volunteers who help out for at least two hours are offered lunch vouchers from one of the food trucks.

As a friendly reminder to volunteers and spectators, NWMRA stresses that this weekend’s event is a family-friendly event, meaning no alcohol or drugs are permitted, and they kindly ask that no dogs or pets be brought so that they don’t have to endure the heat or loud noises.

Parking at Heritage Park is by donation with proceeds benefitting the Salvation Army.

To volunteer, please message North West Mud Racing Association on Facebook and find their posts about this weekend’s event.
