ABBOTSFORD — The Abbotsford Police Board has announced the appointment of Colin Watson as Chief Constable. He will move into the position upon the retirement of Chief Constable Mike Serr November 15.

Watson is serving as a Deputy Chief Constable with the Victoria Police Department. In a news release, the Abbotsford Police Department says Watson brings a wealth of experience with over 26 years of service.

His academic background includes a Masters of Laws from Osgood Hall Law School, a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Texas, and a Bachelor of Arts focusing on Criminology and Administrative Studies. Additionally, he holds a designation as a Chartered Professional in Human Resources.

Chief Designate Watson is excited about the opportunity to lead the AbbyPD. “I am honored to be selected to lead the highly reputable Abbotsford Police Department and serve the City of Abbotsford.”

He says he is looking forward to engaging with staff, connecting with the community, and building upon the existing culture of policing excellence. “One of my objectives will be to ensure that decisions made by senior leadership serve to guide and support officers and staff working first-hand with the community,” said Watson.

Mayor Ross Siemens also chairs the Abbotsford Police Board. He’s convinced Watson is the right person for the job. “Chief Watson’s extensive experience in policing, as a practitioner and leader, along with his progressive and collaborative approach will serve the department and community well.

The selection process for the new Chief Constable began in March with the assistance of a third-party search firm. The Board says the caliber of candidates expressing interest in this position, from both provincial and national levels, attested to the quality of the Abbotsford Police Department.

“The AbbyPD has an excellent reputation, and we are confident that Chief Designate Watson will lead the department into the next chapter of progressive policing, while staying strategically aligned to the ever-demanding public safety priorities of our growing and diverse community,” said Siemens.
