CHILLIWACK — With downtown Chilliwack parking inventory in short order near the intersection of Young Road and Yale Road, the City of Chilliwack has purchased three lots surrounding a former restaurant on Young Road in order to build a sizeable parking lot on Victoria Avenue.

The city wrote on social media Friday (July 28) that it will begin work on building 58 parking stalls on Victoria Avenue in August.

The city says it recently purchased three lots along the north side of Victoria Avenue, east of Young Road, in the downtown core about one block north of District 1881. The specific lots are 9384 Young Road, 46017 Victoria Avenue and 46029 Victoria Avenue.

The previous structures were demolished to make way for the additional parking spaces.

The property at 46017 Victoria Avenue was once Chilliwack General Store where auctions were held.

Phase 1 of the project is scheduled to be completed in fall 2023. Phase 2 of the project is scheduled to be completed by end of summer 2024.

Victoria Avenue will become a one-way roadway from Young Road to Nowell Street. This allows for additional parking spaces to be built within this section of roadway. Additionally, 2 of the 3 lots will be developed with 41 parking stalls. Four stalls will have level 2 electric vehicle chargers.

Due to site specific challenges, the third lot will need to be constructed following further assessment in a second phase. This phase will consist of 17 additional parking stalls. This phase is scheduled to be completed in summer 2024.

The project was awarded to Strohmaier Excavating Ltd. at the July 18 meeting of Chilliwack city council in the amount of $977,797.40.

To date, the city has already completed property purchases, demolition of existing structures, property rezoning, finalization of design drawings, and contractor selection.
