Man reportedly drowns in Vedder River near Peach Park Friday

CHILLIWACK — A 55-year-old man reportedly drowned in the Vedder River near Peach Park Friday afternoon (July 21).

Chilliwack Fire, BC Emergency Health Services, and Chilliwack Search and Rescue were deployed sometime after 3:30 p.m. Friday to an area just west of Peach Park for the report of a possible drowning.

First responders attempted to revive the man with cardiopulmonary resuscitation through chest compressions, but the man could not be revived.

A crew of four SAR rescue personnel utilized a raft to reach the area in the river where the man was administered medical treatment.

Chilliwack RCMP Staff Sgt. Layne Penner told CityNews out of Vancouver that the 55-year-old man may have been possibly fishing and possibly attempted to rescue his dog, before falling into the river.

The BC Coroners Service has taken over the investigation and will probe the cause of the man’s death, CityNews reported Saturday, July 22.
