Union leadership will advise members to accept offer to end port strike
VANCOUVER — The union representing port workers across British Columbia says it will recommend voting yes on the terms of a tentative deal to its membership.
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada says it will meet with members next week in a development that may end the labour dispute between the union and the B-C Maritime Employers Association.
In a written statement, union president Rob Ashton says the deal will be presented at a meeting next Tuesday morning and members will take that day’s 8 a.m. shift off in order to attend.
In a statement, the employers say the agreement is the one proposed by a federal mediator on July 13 that was accepted by both sides before the union’s caucus voted it down earlier this week, leading to a brief resumption of the strike.
