CHILLIWACK — Eight firefighters from Hall 4 on South Sumas Road were dispatched Wednesday afternoon (July 19) to the report of a fire on the first floor patio of a four-storey apartment.

In a news release from assistant fire chief Chris Wilson, fire crews responded to the scene and discovered a small fire on a first-floor patio of a four-storey apartment building that had been extinguished by the occupants of the apartment unit.

Crews quickly overhauled the area and utilized a thermal imaging camera to ensure the fire was completely extinguished and did not extend beyond the area of origin. Crews also assisted in ventilating a small amount of smoke from the apartment unit.

“This fire had the potential to spread rapidly up the vinyl siding on the exterior of the building,” Wilson said. “The quick thinking and actions of the occupants of the apartment unit prevented a fire that could have created significant damage to the building.”
