Sardis Bottle Depot to relocate soon to the old Canadian Tire shopping centre

CHILLIWACK — The Sardis Bottle Depot attracts a unique blend of Chilliwack residents, from those collecting cans and looking to redeem them for cash, to those just looking to recycle plastic, glass, cardboard and other returnable items at a convenient location near Save-On-Foods.

For years now, the bottle depot has been tucked into a cul de sac-like shopping plaza just off Vedder Road and behind the Royal Canadian Legion branch. Shoppers who frequent the Garrison Save-On-Foods know they can access the nearby Sardis Bottle Depot by walking through a hole in a rather rundown fence separating the two businesses.

However, it shouldn’t be too much longer before the bottle depot relocates to a new facility in the old Canadian Tire parking lot, 7560 Vedder Road, behind the Canada Post facility and next to the old Canadian Tire.

Mickey Ho, director of communications and stakeholder engagement for Return-It in Burnaby, says he believes the new Sardis Bottle Depot could open by the end of July.

“The depot is still waiting on some inspections and permits,” Ho said in an email Wednesday morning (July 19) to Fraser Valley Today. “I believe the goal is to be open by end of this month. If I do get a confirmed date, I will try and pass it along to you.”

Bottle depots are independently owned and operated businesses, meaning Return-It doesn’t have control over when the new Sardis Bottle Depot will open.

Jamie Leggatt, director of communications for the City of Chilliwack, says the city’s building department is waiting for paperwork from the applicant’s engineers. A development permit for exterior alterations was issued in October 2022, and a building permit for the facility at 7560 Vedder Road remains active, Leggatt said.
