Sinclair will embark on a challenging but rewarding ride this Saturday, July 8 when he cycles 360 kilometres for the Terry Fox Ride of Hope, which begins in Port Coquitlam and ends at Vedder Park in Chilliwack. Sinclair says he's looking forward to riding with Darrell Fox, Terry Fox's youngest brother, who at 60 years old is still going strong and will be participating in Saturday's long-distance trek.

CHILLIWACK — Hundreds of cyclists from across Canada will be honouring Terry Fox’s courageous legacy in support of cancer research through long-distance cycling rides this year.

The Lower Mainland’s premier endurance event gets underway this Saturday, July 8 as the Vancouver/Fraser Valley Terry Fox Ride of Hope starts at the Terry Fox Hometown Square in Port Coquitlam and wraps up at Vedder Park in Chilliwack at roughly 7:30 p.m.

While other cities across Canada will hold similar Terry Fox Ride of Hope events, this particular B.C. fundraiser will see 32 cyclists ride 360 kilometres in one day to raise important funds for cancer research. Of these 32 cyclists, there are 13 cyclists from Chilliwack.

One of those cyclists is Chilliwack resident Jeremy Sinclair, an avid cyclist and hiker. Sinclair says it will be an incredible honour to ride with Terry’s younger brother Darrell this weekend.

“I know it’s going to hurt but I’m actually excited and looking forward to it,” said Sinclair. “It’s such an honour to ride with Darrell. He’s 60 years old and still going strong and setting Strava KOMs (King of the Mountain). He’s so inspirational.”

Sinclair has been prepping for the ride and then some. He shared a picture of his last training ride to Crescent Beach accompanied by two other cyclists. Altogether, there were 11 cyclists on that Crescent Beach ride.

“It was 180 kilometres and six hours,” Sinclair noted.

On another training ride, Sinclair took part in a Saturday ride to Artist Point up on Mount Baker. The ride spanned 214 kilometres, reached a peak of 2,300 metres elevation, and required 7.5 hours to accomplish.

So far in 2023, Sinclair has 9,776 kilometres of cycling under his belt, combined with 351 riding hours.

Other Chilliwack cyclists include Chris Hindmarsh, Mark Steinebach, Andrew Isaak, Kristian Biela, Juschka Clarke, Talise Lindenbach, Thomas Schellenberg, Randy Henderson, Duane Hetland, Richard Hovde, Johan Bergenhenegouwen and Mike Schouten as well as other riders from Valemount, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Whistler, Agassiz and Maple Ridge.

The Ride of Hope is organized by volunteers willing to go the distance to make a difference, just like Fox did in his Marathon of Hope. From the trails of British Columbia to the coasts of Nova Scotia, this year there are 12 unique Rides taking place across Canada. All funds raised will support groundbreaking cancer research in Canada.

The public is invited to help the Terry Fox Foundation reach its $100,000 goal by donating at https://ride.terryfox.ca/27856. Email Nikki Rekman at nikki@terryfox.org for more information on the Ride of Hope.
