While in the Emergency Department, it is reported that an interaction occurred between one man and the police resulting in an officer discharging their firearm. IIO investigating fatal shooting at Fraser Canyon Hospital in Hope

HOPE — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a police-involved shooting incident in Hope that resulted in the death of one man.

Information provided by the RCMP states that at approximately 11:44 a.m. (June 28, 2023), police attended a report of a motor vehicle incident on Highway 5 at the Zopkios offramp. Several people were taken to the local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. An altercation allegedly occurred between two of the injured persons and police responded.

While in the Emergency Department, it is reported that an interaction occurred between one man and the police resulting in an officer discharging their firearm.

The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The IIO has commenced an investigation, and initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of what occurred.

Fraser Health says Fraser Canyon Hospital’s emergency department is temporarily closed while the IIO investigates the incident.

All patients, staff and medical staff are physically safe and unharmed; however, the Emergency Department will remain closed until the investigation concludes.

Patients with emergencies are asked to call 9-1-1. BC Emergency Health Services resources remain available in Hope and surrounding communities to provide support to those who need it. Patients seeking care for urgent or emergent health concerns may also go to the Chilliwack General Hospital Emergency Department to receive the care they need.

As there is now an active police investigation, any further questions relating to this situation should be directed to the Independent Investigations Office of BC.
