CHILLIWACK — A New Westminster motorcyclist who decided to showboat on Highway 1 in Chilliwack last month got his just reward for unknowingly doing a wheelie in front of a police officer with the Chilliwack B.C. Highway Patrol.
In a statement Wednesday from police, an officer from the Chilliwack B.C. Highway Patrol was traveling behind a group of several motorcycles on May 21 at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Highway 1 between Vedder Road (exit 119) and Annis Road (exit 129). The officer witnessed the rider of one of the motorcycles, later identified as a man from New Westminster in his 20s, perform a wheelie in front of the police vehicle at highway speed, causing the front tire of the motorcycle to lift from the pavement for several seconds.
The officer immediately brought the motorcycle to a safe stop.
Corporal Ryan Bacica with B.C. Highway Patrol Chilliwack said, “The maneuver that this rider performed on a public highway was very dangerous not only to himself, but to other motorists. All drivers, including motorcyclists need to be extra vigilant of their surroundings. In this case, the rider admitted that he was unaware that a police vehicle was behind him.”
