KAMLOOPS — Police in Kelowna say an RCMP aircraft had no problem keeping up with a theft suspect’s speedy escape to Kamloops.

In a news release, Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Cst. Mike Della-Paolera says officers were called to a home in that city on May 29 after a woman claimed an acquaintance had stolen $1,500 in cash from her. The victim said the man was fleeing on his blue Suzuki motorcycle and was likely heading back to Kamloops.

A short time later, officers in Lake Country spotted the motorcycle, which did not have a license plate, speeding along Highway 97. Mounties in marked vehicles tried to conduct a stop, but say the rider evaded them with a series of dangerous, high-speed manoeuvres.

The RCMP plane was dispatched and caught up with the suspect in Westwold, following him all the way to Kamloops.

Upon arrival in Kamloops, police say the suspect parked the motorcycle at a local hotel, apparently unaware of his aerial tail. Police officers swarmed the hotel and arrested the man.

The man is now facing a list of charges, including theft under $5,000, flight from police and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

“RCMP air services was deployed to lessen the dangers to other motorists by not getting into a high-speed pursuit with this individual,” said Della-Paolera in the release. “In this particular case, our teams showed great patience and were able to make an arrest with the help of our colleagues in Kamloops when it was safe to do so.”

RCMP are asking for anyone with further witness information or dashcam video is asked to contact Crime Stoppers 1 (800) 222-8477.
