AGASSIZ — A man who allegedly barricaded himself inside a home in Agassiz prompted a heavy law enforcement response of at least 10 police vehicles Wednesday evening, before he was taken into custody by police.

According to a statement from Agassiz RCMP Sgt. Mike Sargent Thursday morning, the unnamed male was apprehended by police “without incident” at 9:24 p.m. and taken to Chilliwack General Hospital for medical assessment.

Witnesses in Chilliwack described seeing a combination of at least 10 RCMP and Emergency Response Team vehicles traveling on Highway 1 near Bridal Falls (exit 135) and heading north on Highway 9 towards Agassiz.

The site of the standoff was a Beaman Drive home in Agassiz. Pedestrians and motorists had been asked to avoid the area around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. There was apparently no immediate danger to the public, an RCMP spokesperson was quoted as saying in a local media report.
