CHILLIWACK — Get your online accounts ready for the start of what feels like winning the lottery if you get your kids into swim lessons in Chilliwack.

Sign-ups for the next round of swimming lessons at the Rotary Outdoor Pool, Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre, and Cheam Leisure Centre are happening on staggered days this coming week.

Sign-ups for the Rotary Outdoor Pool begin this coming Tuesday, June 6 at 9 a.m., followed by swim lesson sign-ups for the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre Wednesday, June 7 at 9 a.m. Swim lesson sign-ups for Cheam begin Thursday, June 8 at 9 a.m.

For a smoother registration experience, parents are asked to set up an account for themselves and their child on the Perfect Mind platform in advance of registration day. Parents are asked to use the YMCA registration link on the following website to register for swim lessons: https://chilliwackymcamunicipalrecreation.perfectmind.com/

Of note, there is no in-person registration for swim lesson sign-ups at the Rotary Outdoor Pool.

During the last round of swim lesson sign-ups in early March 2023, two parents who posted to Facebook said sign-ups for swim lessons at the Cheam Leisure Centre were full within literally minutes of the 9 a.m. start time Monday morning, March 6.

One parent said she was disappointed that lessons were full within two minutes.

“It was full in 2 minutes,” said Chilliwack mom Leah Reimer. “I had it all ready to go but then it made me log back in and it was so slow. I’ve never lived somewhere where it’s so hard to get my kids into lessons! I emailed them telling them they’re still not meeting the demand.”

Another Chilliwack parent wrote on Facebook that her twins were born during the pandemic, resulting in delays to getting her kids in the water. This same Chilliwack parent was not successful in signing up her kids in March, so she registered them for swim lessons in Abbotsford.

As of late January 2023, the YMCA had 26 lifeguards combined working at Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre and Cheam Leisure Centre, but says additional lifeguards are needed to add more services and programs.

Regrettably, Chilliwack parents who miss out on registering their kids for swim lessons will have to wait for the next round of swim lesson registrations.
