City of Chilliwack mails property tax bills to homeowners; taxes due July 4

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack residents should have received their green-themed property tax notices in their Canada Post mailboxes by now in advance of a property tax deadline of July 4.

The city notes that a five per cent penalty will begin accruing if property taxes are not paid by July 4. An additional penalty of five per cent will apply to any current taxes outstanding after August 3.

The municipal tax bill is accompanied by a pamphlet from the city explaining how and where taxpayer dollars are spent.

The City of Chilliwack, like all B.C. municipalities, collects property taxes on behalf of the city as well as other provincial and regional authorities, including the Ministry of Education, Fraser Valley Regional District, Fraser Valley Regional Hospital District, B.C. Assessment Authority and the Municipal Finance Authority.

Of the city’s portion of taxes, thirty-six per cent is spent on police protection, followed by 22 per cent for parks, recreation and culture; 16 per cent is spent on transportation, public transit and operations; 10 per cent is spent on fire protection, an amount that has not increased in recent years; nine per cent is spent on general government and municipal facilities, followed by four per cent for fiscal services, two per cent for other protection, and one per cent is allocated to planning and development.

The pamphlet goes on to explain that Chilliwack residents are eligible for an additional $2,000 rebate for heat pumps, $1,500 rebate for associated electrical service upgrades, and $1,000 rebate for heat pump water heaters. Top-ups are limited, available on a first-come, first-served basis and some conditions apply.
