RCMP forensics team on scene of Monday’s stand-off, house fire on Knight Rd.

CHILLIWACK — Forensics analysts and other personnel with the RCMP continue to investigate the property at 46007 Knight Road in Chilliwack, the site of Monday’s stand-off and subsequent house fire.

At least six RCMP personnel were present on the property Saturday morning as a male operating the excavator demolished the remains of the house and moved piles of debris. They were also present Friday afternoon based on pictures sent to Fraser Valley Today from a Chilliwack resident who wished to remain anonymous.

A canopy with “Forensic Indentification” wording on it had been set up on Queen Street, just a few metres north of Knight Road, and several police vans belonging to the forensic identification team were parked in and around the property. Yellow police tape was strung up to block access to Queen Street Saturday morning.

Earlier this week, a 29-year-old man was taken into custody following a high-risk incident that began Monday (May 22) and ended in the early morning hours Tuesday. He has been identified as Daniel Hackl. He faces one charge of discharging a firearm with the intent of disfiguring or wounding.

In a news release earlier this week, RCMP said its members were shot at by a suspect inside the home at 46007 Knight Road. Police had been called to the home around 2:15 p.m. Monday in response to a distraught man. Police were aware the man had access to firearms in the house.

Chilliwack RCMP along with members of the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team worked together during the stand-off.

Police report being shot at around 7:45 p.m. At that point, residents along Knight Road, Queen Street, Melville Street and Downes Avenue were told to shelter-in-place and avoid windows and outside walls.

Following negotiations, the suspect walked out of the home and surrendered peacefully to police around 12:30 a.m. early Tuesday morning. He was taken into custody, and police later issued a social media message advising residents of the end of the incident and shelter-in-place request.

“This incident was a very dynamic, high-risk situation for all those involved,” said Sgt. Krista Vrolyk, media relations spokesperson for the Chilliwack RCMP. “Victim Services is available to anyone in need of support and we will be working with residents in the area over the next few days to ensure that they are aware of the services available.”

The home suffered significant fire damage during the incident.

“This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of police work,” said Vrolyk. “Discipline, teamwork and a high degree of expertise and training by Members of the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team and our front-line officers, allowed this incident to be resolved safely without significant injury.”

According to B.C. Assessment records available online, the property was purchased for $800,000 in November 2021. It was first built in 1915 and had living space of 1,306 square feet in a two-bedroom, one-bathroom unit. The lot size is 0.23 acres.
