ABBOTSFORD — Following a fire to a garbage truck that could have been prevented, the City of Abbotsford is reminding residents not to toss batteries into the recycling bin.

The city posted on Facebook Wednesday (May 24) that residents should avoid ditching batteries into their blue bins. Not only are they not accepted in blue recycling bins, they can lead to a fire like the one that happened to a Waste Connections of Canada recycling truck in the summer of 2022. The fire prompted the response of the Abbotsford Fire Department.

“Here we highlight an example from last summer of when batteries weren’t disposed of properly, which unfortunately resulted in a truck fire,” the city posted on social media. “A reminder that materials like lightbulbs and batteries can’t be tossed into the recycling cart as they require special handling. Please take them to the nearest recycling depot where they can be recycled appropriately.”

The city invites residents to use the Waste Wizard online tool at www.abbotsford.ca/wastewizard to find out where batteries can be recycled, or clicking the magnifying glass icon in the Abbotsford Curbside Collection App (www.abbotsford.ca/apps).
