Popkum Starbucks opening this summer, hiring baristas and supervisors

POPKUM — Move over, Tim Hortons. There’s a new coffee shop coming to Popkum in about four months.

Starbucks has posted on Indeed that it is hiring barista and shift supervisor positions for the upcoming opening of its store at 52964 Yale Road, at the intersection of Highway 9 (Agassiz-Rosedale Highway) and Yale Road.

Semi Lee, a Starbucks manager, confirmed in an email Thursday morning that the new location is currently hiring. She posted on Facebook that the new Starbucks will be open in August.

The Fraser Valley Regional District confirmed back in December 2022 that the proposed plaza currently under construction at 52964 Yale Road will contain a Dairy Queen restaurant and a Starbucks, along with four other businesses.

According to Gillian Berger, communications coordinator for the FVRD, the project has a construction value of $750,000. It called for a Dairy Queen Grill and Chill, Starbucks, and four retail units labeled as health, beauty, phone, and “Iris,” which may possibly be an optical retail store.

The commercial development will be located just north of Petro Canada, which contains Subway and Popkum Liquor Store. It’s also across the intersection from the Esso gas station, Tim Hortons, Agency Liquor Store, and Barcelos Flame Grilled Chicken at the Highway 9 and Yale Road roundabout.

The addition of Dairy Queen means it will be the third of its kind in the greater Chilliwack area, with the other two Dairy Queens located on Young Road and Vedder Road in Chilliwack, which are heavily traveled roads like Highway 9.
