CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack firefighters responded to at least six fires on Saturday, April 15, as fire crews were deployed for an assortment of fires and scenarios over the weekend.

Of the six fires, Chilliwack Fire Department responded to five of the six while the Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on Saturday night that appears to be suspicious in nature.

Chilliwack firefighters responded to a trailer fire at a homeless encampment early Saturday morning, before being dispatched to a garage fire in the 5500 block of Alpine Crescent at 4:12 p.m. Saturday. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries associated with those incidents.

But the evening was just getting started for Chilliwack firefighters. Chilliwack crews were deployed to a home on Ledgestone Place in Eastern Hillsides at 5:47 p.m. in which an occupant of the home improperly disposed of hot briquettes into a plastic recycling container, according to Michael Bourdon, assistant fire chief for Chilliwack Fire Department. There was fire damage to a fabric cover, along with a cracked window pane on the house.

Not long after, fire crews were dispatched at about 6:06 p.m. to the 7200 block of Candow Street, just west of Young Road near Fairfield Island. Bourdon reports there was a small fire in the cab of a pickup truck. Neighbours assisted with the extinguishment.

At about 6:12 p.m., Chilliwack firefighters responded to an oven fire near Watson Road and Dundee Place. When crews arrived, the fire was already out. Crews assisted with ventilation, Bourdon said.

Fire crews with the Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department responded sometime around 9:47 p.m. Saturday night for the report of a fully engulfed pickup truck on fire on Chilliwack Lake Road.

CRVFD Chief Mike Danyluk confirmed that his department responded to the fire, but could not comment on the details of the fire.

Sgt. Krista Vrolyk released a statement saying Chilliwack RCMP were called to the 50900 block of Chilliwack Lake Road after receiving information regarding a vehicle fire which had occurred in the previous 24 hours. Initial investigation suggests that the vehicle had been parked at approximately 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 15 and the fire began in the evening hours which followed.

Chilliwack RCMP are asking anyone with any information regarding this vehicle fire to call 604-792-4611 and reference Chilliwack RCMP File 2023-14386.
