Chilliwack Fire Dept. douses fire before it spreads to nearby Nowell St. home

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack firefighters from multiple halls responded to the 9100 block of Nowell Street near downtown Chilliwack for a report of a detached garage early Thursday morning, April 13.

According to a press release from Chilliwack Fire Chief Ian Josephson, 16 firefighters from Halls No. 1 and 4 responded at 3:43 a.m. this morning to a report of a structure fire on Nowell Street. When firefighters arrived on scene, they encountered a fully engulfed detached garage.

Josephson said firefighters managed to contain the fire to the garage and prevented the fire from damaging an adjacent house located five metres away.

There were no civilian injuries or firefighters injuries.

The fire is under investigation by the Chilliwack Fire Department and RCMP fire investigators.

Chilliwack resident Julie Hiscock, a newspaper carrier who was up working overnight Thursday morning and who has previously reported on area fires, reported on social media that the detached structure caught fire sometime around 3:45 a.m. Crews had the fire contained by approximately 4:09 a.m., Hiscock said.

The roof of the garage had visible burn marks on it. It is adjacent to a green house located at the corner of Nowell and Second.
