HOPE — The Hope Fire Department says it responded to three suspicious fires the past 24 hours.

In a press release from Fire Chief Thomas Cameron, Hope Fire Department responded to three separate fire incidents.

Shortly after midnight, Cameron said a call was received for a rubbish fire at a home under construction near Yale and Rupert.

While on scene there, a second call involved a fire in a carport in the 300 block of 3rd Avenue. Cameron said the resident was able to act quickly thereby stopping the fire’s progress.

As crews continued to mop up the first fire, firefighters were dispatched at around 1 a.m. for a report of a structure fire in the 600 block of Hazel Street. According to Cameron, the fire originated in the garage area and a second fire was discovered in a shed on the property, involving an all-terrain vehicle. Yale and District Volunteer Fire Department assisted with an engine response under mutual aid, Cameron said. The home suffered extensive damage; 12 firefighters remained at the scene until 7 a.m.

“All fires are being considered suspicious and remain under investigation by the RCMP,” Cameron said.

Hope resident Sierra Dort said she drove by a home on Yale Street and witnessed a fire in the garage.

“Just on my way home from dropping off a friend and spotted a fire started just minutes before I passed the house,” Dort wrote on Facebook. “I called it in, of course, the second I saw it! They just told me another fire was started down the street. Someone’s obviously going around doing something. Be careful, beware!”
