G.W. Graham QB Lucas Feaver looking for new home after SFU cancels football program

CHILLIWACK — G.W. Graham quarterback Lucas Feaver racked up 2,401 passing yards and 27 passing TDs during a memorable 2022 season in which the Grizzlies won 11 games en route to the provincial championship game.

That impressive stat sheet enabled Feaver, a 5-foot-9, 175-pounder who holds a 3.25 GPA and runs a 4.89 speed in the 40-yard dash, to receive an athletic scholarship to Simon Fraser University in Burnaby and gain acceptance into the Beedie School of Business.

That all changed Tuesday, however, when SFU president Joy Johnson announced the school has ceased its football program. SFU was slated to play this season in the Lone Star Conference.

“I was 100 per cent prepared to go to SFU,” Feaver said in an email Wednesday morning. “I was given an athletic scholarship and was accepted into Beedie School of Business. Multiple SFU recruits including myself watched every SFU spring practices over spring break, as well as attending their spring game. All of the SFU recruits are now in a terrible situation.”

Feaver says he had a signed deal with the university, but that appears to be null and void.

“U Sport recruiting is basically over and majority of scholarship money has been distributed,” Feaver said via email. “When I was given my scholarship it was signed by the athletic director, even though they had plans of terminating the program. Although I did have other offers, I’m still trying to see if it is too late for the universities to have me. I have contacted multiple universities to give myself the best chance of being able to play somewhere next season.”

Feaver had previously narrowed his postsecondary destinations to UBC, Arizona Christian, and SFU, before deciding on the Red Leafs, the only Canadian university that competes in the NCAA.

Feaver’s teammate Tyson Orregaard, a wide receiver who has received a full-ride scholarship and committed to play at the University of Manitoba, touted Feaver’s skill set on Twitter as the result of the SFU debacle.

“Lucas Feaver is the best quarterback I’ve got to see play,” Orregaard said on Tuesday, April 4 on Twitter. “After SFU shut down its program…he’s got no team to play for next year. If you’re a coach needing [a] difference maker at quarterback, reach out to him. Hardest working dude I’ve seen.”
