IHIT leading investigation into third shooting in Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK — The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken the lead in the investigation into the latest shooting in Chilliwack in recent days. Saturday evening’s (Apr. 1) shooting at the Vedder View Gardens Cemetery on Watson Road resulted in the death of one person while a second person was sent to hospital.

IHIT says investigators learned a vehicle, similar to the one suspected of taking the shooter or shooters away from the scene in Chilliwack, was found on fire in nearby Langley a short time later.

At this point, investigators can’t say for certain the vehicle found in Langley is connected to the shooting, but the possibility can’t be ignored. IHIT investigators are working closely with RCMP detachments in Langley, Upper Fraser Valley, the Integrated Forensic Identification Section (IFIS) and the BC Coroners Service.

“Our members will be working with the Chilliwack RCMP over the next few days to canvas the area for witnesses and for CCTV,” said RCMP Sergeant Timothy Pierotti of IHIT. “We’re asking anyone with information about this incident to please contact IHIT immediately.”

The victims in the shooting were thought to be targeted by their assailants and IHIT is working with its partners at the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia to determine if there are any connections to the Lower Mainland Gang Conflict. While the victims have been identified, their names haven’t been released by authorities.

Saturday’s shooting was the third shooting over just eight days in Chilliwack. The first took place March 25 at Rotary Trail Park. The second was March 30 in a Sardis neighbourhood. However investigators have not publically connected the shootings to the one along Watson Road.

IHIT is asking anyone with information to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
