CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack City Council recommended approval of two applications this past week that would see longer hours of operation at two popular establishments in Chilliwack.

Council unanimously voted on Tuesday (Feb. 21) to recommend approval of longer operation hours for Farmhouse Brewing Co., located at Lickman and South Sumas, and Fortitude Wine Bar in District 1881. The application to change liquor license hours now heads to the B.C. Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch.

“I didn’t hear any opposition, our staff are OK with it,” Councillor Jason Lum said during the meeting. “It certainly looks like it brings some of these hours more in line with the establishment just down the road from them. I don’t see any issue with it. I’ll be supporting it.”

Farmhouse is currently open noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and noon to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, closed Sundays. Farmhouse would like to increase its operating hours to 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. The current occupant loads of 60 people for the indoor premises and 85 people for the outdoor grounds will remain unchanged, according to a city staff report.

Farmhouse said its exact operating hours will be announced at some point in the future. It also wrote that the general application approved by council includes time of operation for staff training and prep work at Farmhouse, and to have the option to open to the public earlier than noon, as well as operating for guests and staff later than 8 p.m. or 9 p.m.

Farmhouse Brewing was established in 2020 by a husband-and-wife team who had previously operated a smaller hobby farm. The brewery is located in a custom-built facility with a tasting room, heated patio and outdoor picnic area. Even before opening, they harvested their first annual crop of barley to be used in the brewery. The beer lineup at Farmhouse consists of a stellar mix of staple core beers with some seasonal offerings mixed in from time to time. The tasting room kitchen features artisan-style pizzas and pretzels baked in a Goliath Forno Bravo oven along with appetizers and snacks.

Fortitude Wine Bar, owned by Monica Churcher and located at 103-45922 Thunderbird Lane, is presently closed Monday and Tuesday and open Wednesday through Sunday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.

It has submitted a Change to Hours of Liquor Service application to the B.C. Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch to expand its hours to 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Sunday.

“I think there’s opportunity there for a restaurant or wine bar owner to do other work and training with their staff,” said Councillor Nicole Read, referring to the earlier hours request. “Approving that time is not unreasonable in my book.”

Mayor Ken Popove complimented Fortitude Wine Bar on being a great addition to District 1881.

“I’ve attended their business and they’ve done a great job in our downtown,” Mayor Popove said of Fortitude Wine Bar. “It’s a great addition to have them there. I think their timing is bang on with the redevelopment in the back. It’s just going to get busier and busier. Congrats on your build and good luck for the future.”
