Original story below:

ABBOTSFORD — It wasn’t that long ago in 2019 that the Abbotsford Police Department became aware of an overwhelming number of local youth sending inappropriate selfies of themselves to others cell phone users.

Once police became aware, the “It’s a No” campaign was launched after an extreme resurgence of files in Abbotsford schools surfaced around compromising pictures of local teenagers, according to an online description of an upcoming presentation.

According to police, a call to action came to the Abbotsford Police Department to make a plan and work with the Abbotsford School District.

But the problem seems to have come back once again, as the Abbotsford Police Department Youth Squad has now noticed this disturbing trend of inappropriate pictures making the rounds once again and is trying to get a handle on the situation.

To that end, the Abbotsford Police Department, in partnership with the Abbotsford Police Foundation, will hold a “It’s a No” presentation on Saturday, March 4 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Abbotsford Legacy Sports Centre banquet room at 32470 Haida Drive, in Exhibition Park near Rotary.

Police are inviting one parent per household and a child aged 10 and older to attend the presentation.

The presentation will include engagement with the Abbotsford Police Youth Squad, which will speak about the dangers of youth using social media and will provide them an action plan should they be contacted by someone wanting inappropriate photos from them. The AbbyPD Youth Squad remains committed to youth in the community and genuinely wants to guide and assist them in making smart choices that will affect them the rest of their lives.

The presentation will include light refreshments and treats for youth. The goal is to have an informative session and connect with the broader Abbotsford community.
