AGASSIZ — With the long weekend approaching, a dairy in Agassiz is back to arranging free tours of its farm and related operations.

Creekside Cheese + Creamery is offering free guided farm tours this Friday, February 17 at 10:30 a.m., and Saturday, February 18 at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

“We’re keeping the tradition going and welcoming you to the farm for free farmer-guided farm tours this Family Day Weekend!” Creekside Cheese + Creamery wrote on Facebook on Monday, February 13. “Last year we hosted guided tours for the very first time on Family Day weekend, and they’ve been popular all year long. So if you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend, sign up for a tour! They’re absolutely free, about one hour long, and each tour participant will receive cheese and milk samples to try. Bring the kids and your rain boots and enjoy the company of the prettiest cows and friendliest pigs in the Valley while learning all about life on the farm.”

The farm is asking guests to pre-register by messaging them on Facebook. Please note that space and group size are limited, so registration is required.

Attendees can check out the farm, get a glimpse of the operations, meet some of the beloved animals, gain an overview in the life of a farmer, and receive cheese and milk samples.

The Chef’s Acre Food Truck will be on site serving breakfast and lunch, including the possibility of chef Craig’s poutine, this Thursday through Saturday at Creekside Cheese + Creamery.

Creekside Cheese + Creamery is located at 3990 Chaplin Road in Agassiz. Visit them on Facebook under Creekside Cheese + Creamery.

The farm is managed by Johannes and Julaine Treur, who purchased Creekside Dairy in 2011, according to Creekside’s website. Although the couple had been dairy farming at another location since 2003, with a long line of dairy farmers in his lineage, Johannes had been dreaming of dairy farming since he was a kid. Johannes grew up on a dairy farm in the Netherlands but was unable to see his dreams of dairying come to fruition until shortly after immigrating to Canada in 2002. Julaine and Johannes were married in 2005 and began growing both their family and their herd. The couple milks just over 100 cows on their well-kept farm in Agassiz.

Construction on the cheese shop and underground cheese cave began in November 2020, and the Treurs began making cheese in June 2021. The cheese shop officially opened in August 2021 in the beautiful countryside of Agassiz.
