Chilliwack-Hope MP Mark Strahl says federal Liberals offer assisted suicide in place of real solutions

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack-Hope MP Mark Strahl says the federal Liberals offer assisted suicide to vulnerable people and Canadian veterans when they should be providing tangible solutions instead.

“When the Liberals brought in their medical aid in dying regime, they promised to protect vulnerable people,” Strahl said in a prepared statement during a speech in the House of Commons on Monday (Feb. 13). “They have failed to do so. Veterans who have called Veterans Affairs to ask for help have been offered assisted suicide instead. Persons with disabilities unable to find supportive housing have been offered assisted suicide instead.”

Offering assisted suicide masks a much bigger problem, Strahl argued.

“In too many cases, vulnerable Canadians are being offered assisted suicide instead of the support they need and want from the system,” Strahl said. ”Now the Liberals want to add those suffering from mental illness to their assisted suicide regime as well.”

Back in December, Strahl says he was among the Conservative MPs that urged the Liberal government to pause its pursuit of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) for those struggling with mental illness. He said there were at least six instances of veterans improperly offered assisted death by Veterans Canada employees to solve issues like building a disability ramp. He says opposition to the expansion of MAiD has been echoed by the heads of psychiatry at Canada’s 17 medical schools who have stated Canada is not ready for a hasty expansion of MAiD.

Strahl continues to call for a complete rejection of medical assistance in dying for those suffering solely from mental illness.

“After months of dragging their feet, they have belatedly brought forward a delay to this reckless idea,” Strahl said. “But we don’t just need to delay this dangerous expansion of assisted suicide, we need to reject it entirely. Conservatives will never give up on those experiencing mental illness. We believe that recovery is possible and that we should focus on offering treatment and help, not assisted death, to those who are suffering. This is a matter of life and death and we must act to protect vulnerable people, once and for all.”
